About

Sven Abow is the founder of SureJamz Studios, a creative platform based in the Gateway Arts District just outside Washington, D.C. Originally launched in 1998 as a home for recording, collaboration, and rhythmic exploration, SureJamz has grown into a dynamic hub for live performance, music education, improvisational play, and community connection. During the pandemic, Sven expanded the vision of SureJamz to include virtual jam sessions and remote collaborations—revitalizing the platform as a space for staying musically engaged across distance and time.

A seasoned drummer, percussionist, and multi-instrumentalist, Sven’s musical journey spans decades and continents. Born in Frankfurt, Germany, he began performing on stage at age 11 and went on to study at the Percussion Institute of Technology (PIT) in Hollywood, California, graduating with honors in 1992. His deep engagement with global rhythmic traditions—including Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Middle Eastern, African, and American styles—has informed a wide-ranging career as a performer, composer, and sound designer. Over the years, he has collaborated with countless artists and ensembles. Currently, he drums with The Wharf Rats (Grateful Dead tribute) and Proverbs Reggae Band (roots rock and soca), plays hand percussion with Tower Green (medieval-inspired folk), and performs as a singer and guitarist, both solo and with bands. His original work has been recognized with a Meet The Composer grant (2006) and a Metro DC Dance Award (2008) for Best Sound Design and Original Composition at the Kennedy Center.

In addition to his performance work, Sven is a passionate educator and seasoned audio engineer. He teaches private students and directs the Middle and High School Guitar Ensembles at the Washington Waldorf School. His engineering credits include live and studio work for Brentwood Arts Exchange, SAARC, PG Ballroom, and Strathmore. As curator of the Listening Room Concert Series at Gateway Arts Center, Sven continues to cultivate spaces where creativity, collaboration, and the language of rhythm thrive.
